Description Antique Tibetan bronze Avalokitesvara Buddha, 18th century. Dimensions: 7.0 x 5.0 x 3.0 cm. History of the Avalokitesvara Buddha: The deity Avalokitesvara is one of the most widely revered bodhisattvas in Buddhism and is the embodiment of the compassion of all Buddhas. In China and its sphere of cultural influence, Avalokitesvara is often depicted in a female form known as Guan Yin. In Tibetan, Avalokitesvara is known as Chenrezig and is said to embody the Dalai Lama, the Karmapa and other high lamas. In Tibetan tradition, two versions of the origin of Avalokitesvara prevail. In one he is considered a devoted, compassionate Buddhist monk who became a bodhisattva after his transformation into Avalokitesvara. This perception, however, does not contradict the second version, which presents him as a universal manifestation of compassion.
