Description Antique Tibetan Bronze – gilded Buddha Shakyamuni, 18th century. Dimensions: 3.5 x 2.5 x 2.0 cm. Shakyamuni Buddha Story: Bhaiṣajyaguru is the Buddha of healing and medicine in Buddhism. Commonly referred to as the “Medicine Buddha”, he is described as a physician who cures suffering using the medicine of his teachings. “Vaiḍūrya” is a gemstone that most translators have rendered as lapis lazuli. The depiction of Bhaiṣajyaguru is usually depicted as a Buddha-like figure holding a kalipda. Bhaiṣajyaguru is described in the Medicine Buddha Sutra of the same name, as a bodhisattva who took twelve great vows. His name is generally translated as “Medicine Guru”.
