Description A pair of Tibetan bronze – plated Buddha Mahakala, 19th century. Dimensions: 16.0 x 13.0 x 5.0 cm. History of Mahākāla: Mahākāla is a deity common to Hinduism and Buddhism. Her name etymologically means “beyond time” or death. In Buddhism, Mahākāla is seen as a “protector of Dharma” but also an angry version of the Buddha, while in Hinduism, he is a fierce manifestation of the Hindu god Shiva. Mahākāla appears as a patron deity in various Buddhist traditions, such as Chinese Esoteric Buddhism, Shingon, and Tibetan Buddhism. Depictions of Tibetan Buddhism Two-Handed Forms: The two-handed depiction of Mahākāla is a patron deity of the Karma Kagyu School, depicted wearing a cloak.
