History of Yama Dharmaraja: In East Asian and Buddhist mythology, Yama is the King of Hell and judge of the dead. In Tibetan Buddhism Yama appears in the form of Yama Dharmaraja. It is considered both the beginning of the cycle of death and rebirth and a respected guardian of spiritual practice. In terms of iconography he is often depicted with the head of a buffalo, three round eyes, sharp horns entwined with flame, fierce and angry. In his right hand he often has a staff with a skull and in his left a lasso. On his head is a crown of skulls. In many depictions she stands on a recumbent bull that crushes a man lying on his back.
