Description Antique Chinese Bronze Buddha Guan Yin, Ming Dynasty. Dimensions: 32.0 x 21.0 x 14.5 cm. History of Guan Yin: Guan Yin is the Chinese name of Avalokiteshvara. Her full name is Guanshiyin which means “observing the sounds (or cries) of the world”. It represents mercy and compassion and is popular in the East and West. She takes various forms throughout the world, at different times, and can appear as either male or female. Representations of Guan Yin in the Song Dynasty were masculine in appearance. But because Guan Yin is considered the personification of compassion and kindness, and a mother-goddess as well as the patroness of mothers and sailors, his representation became mostly female around the 12th century.
