Biography: A major Sardinian painter of the 19th century, Giovanni Marghinotti was born in Cagliari in 1798. Giovanni Marghinotti studied in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca between 1822 and 1829. With a neoclassical-purist taste, Giovanni Marghinotti was able to add a romantic flavor to the latter. The various portraits of Charles-Félix in the palaces of Cagliari are an example of this. Giovanni Marghinotti also produced canvases with a religious theme in various Sardinian churches. It was also appreciated outside the island. He made the portraits of princes and kings of Savoy. Giovanni Marghinotti received the chair of drawing and painting of the Accademia Albertina in Turin in 1847 where he taught until 1856. At that time, Giovanni Marghinotti participated in all the exhibitions of the Society promoting fine arts. Giovanni Marghinotti traveled to Madrid in 1852 where he offered a portrait of King Victor Emmanuel II and a Madonna to the King Consort of Spain. In 1854, during a second trip to Madrid, he was made a knight of the order of Charles III of Spain. Giovanni Marghinotti died in Cagliari in 1865 where he had returned in 1856 and where he was appreciated as a portraitist. His paintings are exhibited at the Sassari museum as well as in the municipal gallery of Cagliari.
