- Dr Rifaat Al-Assad was born in 1937 in the then village of "Al-Kirdaha" which is now the city of "Al-Kirdaha".
- Dr Rifaat Al-Assad was brought up by God fearing parents who believed in Arab unity. His father's struggle against French occupation testifies to that.His father was imprisoned, tortured and exiled several times.
- Dr Rifaat Al-Assad studied in "Al-Kirdaha" primary school were he received his first certificate.
- He joined the Socialist Arab Baath party as an active member in 1951. Dr Rifaat Al-Assad took his party oath in 1952. His political activities then included distributing publications, leading students' demonstrations against the dictatorship "Adib Al-Shishkly", and facing imprisonment and torture as a result.
- Dr Rifaat Al-Assad became distinguished in the ranks of the party as a brave activist and student leader; he represented the party in the students' leadership.
- He is known for his physical strength as well as his intellectual abilities which made him one of the strongest advocates f people's concerns and welfare in the then emerging Baath party.
